In this beginner's tutorial, you will be taught how to produce a variety of shibori tie-dye designs with ease, including colorful patterns. I will provide you with all the necessary tips and techniques to create stunning shibori designs at home.
Shibori dyeing technique
Shibori is a dyeing technique that originated in Japan. It involves folding, bunching, or bundling fabric and using a resist to bind it. The fabric is then dyed with indigo. There are many methods to achieve the desired effect, such as folding, twisting, stitching, or binding the fabric before dyeing it. In essence, any technique that can manipulate the fabric before dyeing can create the shibori look.
Materials
To carry out resist-dyeing, certain fundamental tools and materials are required. These include a bowl container, or bucket to hold the dye bath, white fabric made of natural fibers (with 100% cotton being the most effective), vat dyes, rubber bands, long rubber gloves, and a stainless steel spoon for stirring, as well as a squirt bottle. Additionally, depending on the chosen resist-dyeing technique, a tiedye rack may also be used.
Video Tutorial
To carry out the process of tie-dyeing, the following steps are required:
Step 1: Begin by laying the fabric on a flat surface.
Step 2: Fold the fabric accordion-style into a rectangle.
Step 3: Fold the fabric accordion-style again, this time into a triangle.
Step 4: Bind the two end sections of the fabric (triangular) using rubber bands.
Step 5: In a bowl with hot water, mix the first dye color (Golden Yellow) with a combination of caustic soda and hydrosulphite. Stir with a spoon while mixing.
Step 6: Dye the two bottom triangular edges of the fabric using the first color mix. Do not dye the center part.
Step 7: Indicate an outline with rubber bands where the first color was dyed to enable the second color to be dyed on the edge.
Step 8: Mix the second color (Red) and dye the outlined area.
Step 9: Mix the third color (Black) and pour it into a squirt bottle.
Step 10: Place the triangular fabric on a tiedye rack and apply the third color (Black) dye to the middle area.
Step 11: Allow the fabric to sit for 15-30 minutes and then rinse it out. Continue rinsing until excess dye is removed and water runs clear.
